Let’s Face it! Portraits in Fabric and Thread Workshop

Let’s Face it! Portraits in Fabric and Thread – Workshop with Laura Rosenspan
All levels, June 7th from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Members Only:  $50.00
In person at the Mineola Community Center

Seats will be made available to non-members after May 6th.

Come and enjoy a fun-filled day with Laura Rosenspan, a long-time quilt artist and teacher, where you will learn to create a quilted portrait of your choice. Photos of people or pets – or sketches – or greeting cards – or magazine images – or your own imagination – may be used for inspiration! No extra tools or patterns are required.

Sewing machines are required. There are some techniques that include hand stitching, and tacking, but free-motion and use of double needles and zig-zag are really all about the machine.

Laura says:
“After each of my demos, participants will go back to their workstations and try out the techniques. This is a ‘learning by doing’ workshop.

Using your own sewing machine (no fancy machine necessary) you will learn how to express yourself with surface design stitching, both before the quilt sandwich is made, and free-motion quilting through layers, inspired by work that has impressed you and/or to create your own images on fabric.

Find out how “drawing” on fabric can be more fun than drawing on paper. Thread painting and free-motion work with a sewing machine are used for both practical application and embellishment. Machine appliqué is not a dirty word. Including reflections and shadows can add a lot of depth and interest to your work. “

A selection of fabrics in various solids and prints, including fabrics that represent skin tone and hair (depending on the portrait), will be needed. Optional yarns, trims, piping, seam tape, decorative threads or fibers can also be used. This will be an opportunity to create, experiment with newlylearned techniques and to express yourself! Learn how to draw portraits on fabric!
